Memorial municipal de Gravatá: análise dos rastros de memória em sua exposição de longa duração

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the traces of memories printed in the exhibition of the material collection of the Municipal Memorial of Gravatá-PE, considering the limitations and potential that a municipal cultural device has. Through the bibliographical review, it was possible to understand the typology of the Memorial through the concepts of “place of memory” by Pierre Nora (1993) and the contributions of the term “memorial” by Jorge Barcellos (1999), as well as comparing the attributions of these places with the conceptualization of “museum” by ICOM (2022) and its social functions through Sociomuseology. Furthermore, the history and culture of the city of Gravatá was presented, as well as the male and female characters that are in the memory of the municipality and their contributions to the population, making it possible to identify the influences on the cultural construction of the municipality. The history and functioning of the Municipal Memorial also gained prominence, making it possible to identify how this institution is inserted into the reality of Gravata, since it is the only institutionalized space of memory and culture in the city. However, these individuals are not the only ones who contributed to the constitution of the city, therefore, the study also aimed to analyze how the community is represented in the Memorial's narrative. To understand this representation, descriptive interviews were carried out with the institution's employees, seeking to expose the perceptions of those who are making the space work on a daily basis, and a form was applied to the population, as a way of presenting the way in which people from Gravatá relate to the environment. With this, the research sought to present the capabilities and restrictions that the Municipal Memorial has, given that memory has social, cultural and political diversities that the institution sometimes leaves out, but that through constant study and review can be transformed in an inclusive space.
